There has been a study going on about why obesity is so high in the Mississippi Delta. No one can seem to really answer it but, everyone seems to have they own thoughts about why we have that problem here. My idea about that is that there are too many places available for kids to get junk food and unhealthy food, and the kids eat too much. In the urban parts of these small delta towns junk food is literally available on every corner for kids or any one else of that matter to get. Take Greenwood and the typical urban student for example.... These students eating pattern usually go as follows:
1. Eat breakfast at school.
2. heads to home room stop by the snack machine or a teacher that sells snacks.
3. Goes to 1st, 2Nd, and 3rd period doing the same.
4. Goes to lunch eat the lunch and buy snacks at lunch.
5. Go to 5Th, 6Th, and 7Th period doing the same as 1st period through 4Th.
6. Leave school and stop by the Chinese store or corner store for snacks or unhealthy cooked food.
7. wait bout 30 minutes to a hour and go to the lady house down the street or across the street to buy more cooked food or snacks.
8.wait about 30 minutes after that buys snacks from the snowball man driving through the neighborhood.
9. About an hour or two later they eat again when they mother come home.
So with those eating patterns its no wonder a lot of kids in the Delta are obese. I know a number of kids that does this. So if there really is an obesity problem, then to me it comes back to the availability of the food to the kids.
